CASE STUDY:  Advocate Lutheran General Hospital Site Electrical

Location
Park Ridge, IL

Key Stakeholders:
Advocate Lutheran General Hospital
Power Construction
Jamerson & Bauwens Electric

Scope of Work
Working as a subcontractor to Power Construction, Intren contracted directly to Jamerson & Bauwens Electric. Included in Intren’s contract:

  • Concrete encased primary electric utility ductbank and splice vault
  • Roadway lighting
  • In-form concrete wall accent lighting
  • Under-lit concrete bench lighting
  • Decorative pathway/walkway lighting

Under a separate contract, Intren installed conduit to the splice vault located at the customer’s property line by directional boring methods so that ComEd could bring the new primary electric service from a utility power line located several blocks away.

Unusual Challenges
This was a very congested site making coordination the greatest challenge of the project. Work was tightly scheduled so that each of the subcontractors was able to work on site without preventing others from performing their work or to cause damage to completed work. The small size of the site necessitated that material and equipment storage be kept to a minimum. Because this was an operating hospital, special care had to be taken not to damage the existing utilities that serve the building and pass through the property.

Creative Solutions
Intren foreman were proactive, interacting daily with the Power Construction site superintendent and the Jamerson job foreman to coordinate and facilitate the contracted scope of work as the project progressed. To protect the existing site utilities, Intren, as an extra precaution, utilized its locating department to sweep the area for existing private facilities prior to excavating. This step yielded excellent results in avoiding property damage or inconveniences to hospital facilities.
